Role Title Head of Software Company our client — a spin-out of Imperial College London and University College Dublin. Our innovations solve EV charging challenges by adding fast charging in every space at the cost of slow charging. Location Remote, UK Role Overview We are seeking an experienced Head of Software to lead product and platform development for our client’s EV charging solutions. You will build and scale the software function, own roadmap delivery, and ensure our Charge Point Management System (CPMS) and embedded software meet market, reliability and safety requirements. This is a hands-on leadership role: you will both manage and mentor engineers and remain comfortable coding, architecting and shipping production systems. Key Responsibilities Lead, grow and mentor a software team spanning backend, frontend, DevOps and embedded/firmware engineers. Define and own the software roadmap and delivery for our client’s CPMS, backend services, APIs and device software. Architect scalable, secure cloud-native systems integrating with charge points, billing, payment and third-party platforms. Drive product-quality processes: testing, CI/CD, incident management, monitoring and security best practices. Collaborate with hardware, product and commercial teams to ensure seamless system integration and deployment at scale. Recruit top engineering talent and shape team structure, processes and culture. Balance technical debt, feature delivery and regulatory/compliance requirements relevant to EV charging. Represent the software team to investors, partners and stakeholders as needed. Experience & Skills Proven leadership experience running software teams and delivering product-grade platforms (Head of Software, Engineering Manager, Lead Developer or similar). Experience with Charge Point Management Systems (CPMS) or EV charging industry strongly desirable. Strong backend architecture skills (microservices, event-driven systems), cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and API design. Familiarity with embedded/firmware software and device-to-cloud integration. Hands-on coding experience and ability to contribute technically (languages and stacks as appropriate). Demonstrable experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability and incident response. Good understanding of security, data privacy and regulatory considerations for connected devices and payments. Excellent communication skills — able to work closely with cross-functional teams and external partners. What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months) Established clear software roadmap aligned to our client product and commercial goals. Hired and onboarded key engineering hires to close capability gaps. Implemented robust CI/CD, testing and monitoring practices to improve release velocity and reliability. Delivered initial CPMS feature set milestones and stable device-cloud integration for pilot deployments. Built strong collaboration with hardware and product teams and established stakeholder reporting processes. Personal Attributes Pragmatic, outcome-focused and willing to be hands-on. Strong problem-solving and prioritisation skills. Comfortable in an early-stage, fast-moving environment and able to adapt to shifting priorities. Passion for sustainable transport and EV charging innovation. How to Apply Please send your CV and a short note explaining your experience with EV/CPMS or similar device-cloud platforms and why you’d like to join our client to the hiring contact provided by our recruitment partner. Interviews will be scheduled by mutual availability.
